Nigerian Scientist Develops Revolutionary Oil Spill Cleanup Technology

Environmental rights advocate and marine plant researcher Anthonymaria Odukaesieme has invented Spillguard Oil-Absorbent, an indigenous biodegradable solution for oil spill cleanup and bioremediation in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions. The 100% natural, human and environmentally friendly polymer can clean up oil spillage of any magnitude on both water and land.

Registered in 2002 with the Federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the invention uses locally sourced raw materials and can absorb crude and processed oil spills within minutes of application. The aerated sorbent, extracted from carbonated biodegradable materials, marks and engulfs oil spills, reducing them to wax for easy removal with nets.

The technology offers multiple environmental benefits, as recovered oil can be recycled in refineries while remaining Spillguard material can be used as bitumen, fossil fuel, or organic fertilizer. Odukaesieme, who is also a scientist, author, and medical practitioner, emphasizes that the product helps detoxify and fertilize polluted environments while being safe for cleaning oil-contaminated animals and birds.

The innovation has passed comprehensive analytical tests including toxicity, efficacy, stability, and microbial quality assessments, positioning it as a crucial tool for Nigeria’s ecological restoration efforts.
